Helicoptering over Iceland

November 17, 2011 in Fieldwork

In 2009, I took a trip to Iceland, rode a helicopter ride over the rift, and landed on the Langjökull glacier.  Iceland may be my favorite place on Earth, with a stark beauty and rugged landscape that is hard to forget.  Anyone else have Iceland pictures?  Please share.

I I wonder if this lake is a melted remnant of a glacial tongue.

Turning inland toward Langjökull glacier and the rift.

Langjökull glacier, which was very hard to photograph in this light.

Snurrin said the ground was too soft to land, but he could touch the skids down and hover while we get out for a better look. Yes, let's try that.

Waterfall on the way to see the rift.

The fog starts to set in leaving behind very flat lighting. This is sort of abstract without scale.

The water looked like it was glowing.

Those are people snorkeling in the rift. Note the nice fault ramps starting to form.

Sinuous rift heading into the distance, while Snurrin shows off his mad piloting skills. Very hard to get a level shot, but good fun.

I think the lesson is that if you want to learn geology, sometimes you have to step back (or up) to get a little perspective.
